Ashby is recognisable for his unique methods of practice employing a skateboard or surfboard as a tool to paint aura. His work is linked through a poetic and intuitive sensitivity to the expressive potential of space, light, colour and context.

Flow can be defined as a psychological experience where one is performing an activity and is fully immersed in an energized focus. In some professions, such as in the case of athletes and musicians, flow is also known as “in the zone”.

While living in America in 2009, Ashby created, among other works, a notable portrait of Barack Obama, which became sought after by collectors at Art Basel in Miami.

Live Art

Australia’s much-loved artist, Brett Ashby explores his contemporary artistic journey of art therapy through twelve years of commissioned public and performance artwork paintings, recognising and surviving cancer along the way.

Hope Mural

The Artist-in-Residence programme brings a different dimension to Visual Arts classes at Melbourne Grammar School. While all Visual Arts teachers are also practicing artists in their own right, the injection of new ideas increases the likelihood that students will discover a visual language that particularly resonates with them.
